Which is where the slideshow is all fine and good. But as you click through, you will reach the images where they are cooking the fuckers and serving them up! “Around 65 million guinea pigs are eaten in Peru every year” says one photo caption.
Look, I’m not here to judge what animals one chooses to eat, I’m sure there’s a few branches on my family tree that have a recipe for squirrel stew that’ll curl your toes with its deliciousness. But I’m betting they did not dress up said squirrel in a miniature Minnie Pearl outfit and parade it around town before chucking it into the stew pot. But maybe it’s just some cultural insensitivity on my part. I am nothing if not ignorant. Anyway! In Peru, women had no right and could own none of the domestic large animals. They were allowed to own the guinea pigs that scampered around the kitchen eating the leftover vegies from making meals. Some people taught the women how to make it into a business. The profits from that gave them powere enough to win the right to vote and have rights to own more.
The guinea pigs are killed quickly without pain by a quick twist in the neck after a life of running and pooping freely. That is a lot better than the animal who are expoited raped with artificial insemination, locked up in birthing and veal cages, overworked for milk and eggs before being kicked around and abused in rodeos and all are eventually killed in slow and painful deaths. If they are for kosher(jewish) or halal(moslem) food then it is a very slow death by bleeding from a throat slit. That is because the religiously their gods told them they cannot eat anything with blood and this is their way of tricking their own god into killing animals. Guinea pigs are supposed to be best at 6 months hence the tiny girl pigs next to bigger male pig.
My son has a guinea pig and even though I tease him when he doesn’t feed her on time, that I will give her to a peruvian family, I do all the cleaning and bathing of her and (feed her when he forgets) because she is part of the family now. But we also have a rescued tarantula in a big tank in the bathroom as well had a fly for a day that he hand-fed because it was too week after buzzing in a lamp all day.
If it comes in our home, it is safe from harm. The mouse under the kitchen sink has her own food and water bowls since she showed up last year.

Anyone of these critics include meat in their diets? Yes? Then I wouldn’t be one to criticize others for what they eat. Pigs are considered to be intelligent but is anyone here decrying how their a food source here in the States apart from PETA folks? Nope. No, guinea pigs are not fried alive. Yeah, it’s horrible, just like killing any animal is. I’m not going to judge the Peruvians any more for eating guinea pigs than I would Americans for eating pigs (said to be more intelligent than dogs) or the Chinese for eating dogs (although it personally horrifies me, as a dog lover). Cows are sacred to the Hindus, and it must seem horrible to them that much of the world enjoys beef. I always felt like a hypocrite for being upset about dogs and other animals I liked being eaten, while still eating other animals… and that’s one of the many reasons I became a vegetarian and love it! Ethnocentricism is definitely what’s going on in a lot of these comments. Just b/c an animal isn’t your definition of cute, or it’s not considered a pet in your culture, doesn’t mean it deserves to be killed any more than a darling guinea pig you consider a pet.
And as someone else said, if THIS disturbs you, you should read about factory farming and slaughterhouse conditions. FAR more disturbing than the lives and deaths of these guinea pigs, and it makes its way to your plate every day if you eat meat here in the US (unless you eat exclusively free-range, but even that can just mean the animal has enough room to turn around in its cage or something- usually it didn’t get to run around free in a beautiful pasture until it was humanely euthanized or whatever.) 95% of meat consumed in America is from agribusiness’s environmentally destructive factory farm industry. Just some food for thought… eat meat if you want, but don’t be uneducated or a hypocrite.

Not to affend the Peruvians, but these little critters are so cute, and as to killing any little creature, now that is just kind of sad. The thing is dressing them up makes them cute and you may grow an attachment to them, which is why I think this is a BAD idea… But don’t cook them.. Try having them as a pet, and see if you want to eat them now. They are really great to have as a pet, I have one and they are great.. Second, I’ve owned cuyes (or guinea pigs, as you people call them) AS PETS, so I know what you talk about. Now I will ask you to leave your mono-cultural bubble for a second and start thinking in a more open way. Let’s get going:
“Cuyes” (plural form of “cuy”, which is the REAL name of these little buddies) are native from Peru, South America (NOT GUINEA, so they ain’t “Guinea Pigs”, FFS!!!). If you do a little of research, you will find that the ancient inhabitants of the peruvian Andes domesticated the cuyes 7,000 years ago, as a source of meat, and they have been used that way since then. Today, the cuy meat is an important component of peruvian gastronomy, and is part of the alimentation of a lot of people in the Andes region (Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and more).
As pets, cuyes have a more recent history. As a former owner of one, I know they are very cute and loving pets, and I understand your concern about this article. But please, you must understand that the world is more bigger than your country, and there are many forms of culture in it. Breeding and eating cuyes has been part of the culture of andean people for much more years than the time the europeans arrived to this continent, and way more time than these animals have been owned as pets. So, if you don’t like what you see, it’s OK, but please refrain to insult the way of life of my compatriots. Thanks.
BTW, the only time I had to eat a cuy, was when I was invited to a wedding in Cuzco. They served us a typical dish which contained a half of a cuy. As a former owner of one, I was pretty shocked, but for politeness I had to dig it. It was pretty good, I must confess, but I didn’t finish it by a long way. Since then I’ve never eaten cuy meat again, but I don’t start complaining when I see someone eating it. If they want to, it’s OK for me.

Guinea pigs are small, helpless, and smart creatures that, in my opinion and many others, should not be eaten. This is terrible and disgusting. These animals should be used as pets and not as a food source. I understand that, in some areas, guinea pigs are needed in order to have any food. But, if there is other food for them to eat, then the should not roast guinea pigs like that and they should let them live.
