or indie rock chanteuses in general, I must humbly recommend you pick up Joan as Police Woman‘s album, Real Life. Like so many artists, JAPW is huge overseas, touring constantly, but relatively lost in the miasma of American music. Still! The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Joan Wasser, who’s played on albums/toured with everyone from Rufus Wainwright and Antony (she’s one of “the Johnsons”) to Adam Green, the songs are exceedingly well-crafted and smart as hell.
It should be noted, in the interest of making me seem more interesting than I truly am, that I met Joan a couple of times, through a strange and ultimately insane acquaintance (it’s a looong story), and she’s fantabulously genuinely great. For whatever that’s worth.
